Bruno Prize Awarded to Prof. Itzik Mizrahi
The 2024 Bruno Prize has been granted to Prof. Itzik Mizrahi from the Department of Life Sciences at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, based on his exceptional scientific achievements, talent, and creativity.
The Michael Bruno Prize, which comes with a check for $165,000, is awarded annually by the "Habonim" Foundation to leading Israeli scientists and researchers who have demonstrated exceptional talent and creativity in their academic work, and have been identified, based on their achievements, as having the potential for significant breakthroughs in their field. Prof. Mizrahi is the first recipient of this prestigious prize at Ben-Gurion University.

Prof. Itzik Mizrahi is affiliated with the Department of Life Sciences, the Goldman Sonnenfeld School of Sustainability and Climate Change, and the National Institute for Biotechnology in the Negev at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.
He is a scientist in the field of microbial ecology with a focus on the microbiome of living organisms. His research has implications for the environment, food security, and health.
Prof. Mizrahi has accumulated a long list of grants and awards, has been elected as a member of the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM) and the European Academy of Microbiology (EAM), and even has a bacterium named after him, "Parabutella mizrahi."
Itai Halevy and Maya Schuldiner from the Weizmann Institute of Science also won the 2024 Bruno Prize.
The Bruno Prize is named after the economist, Prof. Michael Bruno, who was Governor of the Bank of Israel and served as Chairman of the Board of the Rothschild Prize Organization. The prize has been awarded since 1999 by leading scientists in Israel.
