Prof. Chaim Hames took up the rector's postion on August 1, 2018.
He served as Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev from 2016, until he was elected rector.
Hames received his PhD in Medieval History from Cambridge University in 1996, and since then has been a lecturer in the Department of General History at BGU. From 2011-2015, he was the department chair.
In 2013, he set up the Center for the Study of Conversion and Inter-Religious Encounters as part of the I-CORE initiative (one of two Center's funded in the Humanities and the only Center based in BGU).
His research interests include Medieval and Renaissance Jewish, Christian and Muslim mysticism and philosophy, apocalypticism, inter-religious polemics, conversion, Bible and Talmud translations and issues dealing with religious conversion.

Vice Rector, Prof. Gal deBotton

Prof. deBotton took up the position on August 5, 2018.
He served as Head of BGU's Department of Biomedical Engineering from 2007 till 2012.
Gal deBotton received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1993, and since has been a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at BGU.
Since 2007 he is also affiliated with the Department of Biomedical Engineering.
His research interests, in the field of the Mechanics of Solids, are: composite and smart materials, mechanical response of soft biological tissues, electro-mechanical coupling in polymer networks, and shape memory alloys (Nitinol) springs.
Prof. Louisa Meshi, Pro-Rector for Education
Prof. Meshi took up the position on August 1st, 2024.
Prof. Louisa Meshi is a faculty member in the Department of Materials Engineering at BGU. She is a leading figure in the field of electron crystallography, which focuses on deciphering the atomic structure of new crystals through a combination of electron imaging and diffraction techniques. Her research is distinguished by the development of these methodologies and their application to metallurgy, including metals, alloys, and intermetallic compounds.
Since the beginning of her undergraduate studies, Prof. Meshi has been closely tied to Ben-Gurion University, where she earned all three of her degrees in the Department of Materials Engineering. In 2009, following a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Physics at the University of Bristol, UK, she rejoined the Department of Materials Engineering as a lecturer. Since then, she has held various senior positions in both research and academic management within the department.
Prof. Meshi has received numerous prestigious awards, including the Wolf and Margulis prizes for excellence during her doctoral studies, as well as the Krill Prize for Excellence in Scientific Research from the Wolf Foundation in 2012. Since 2022, she has served as a co-editor of the renowned scientific journal IUCrJ.
